a CNC
A CNC is a computer controlled cutting machine which is generally used for cutting wood, metal, and other materials. Ours uses a router bit specifically to cut wood that travels in a 3D plane. This allows us to cut layers off your material little by little. Slowly taking down the high spots until the top is flat. This creates a flat reference allowing us to flip the slab and flatten the bottom. Making the piece 100% flat and the same thickness everywhere.
A CNC allows you to be extremely precise when flatting slabs. Attempting to complete the task be hand with a planer, or router sled allows human error to be introduced in the process. A CNC is given clear and precise instructions to produce identical results each time. It also allows the operator to do so safely away from the spinning router head. CNCs will save you money and time when flattening a slab. Flattening a slab by hand may take several hours where a CNC can do it in a few.
